When Eowyn faces the witchking, didn't you expect him to say "I am your father..."
Ummm.... nope. We told her that when Luke faced Darth Vader, we expected *him* to say "Not by hand of mortal man can I die..."
I really needed this viewing. I have been weepy for two days in anticipation of it, and I started crying during the "turn off your cell phone" spot. I cried every time I saw Minas Tirith, Osgiliath, or Edoras. I wanted to shake everyone who writes weepy, insecure Faramir - I am in awe of the boy's strength! Chris and I cried and sang Into the West at the end (the four of us were the only ones who stayed throught the credits so hey - In fact, even our friend left to find the bathroom. We told her we never drink during the mivies, but I cried so much I don't think it would have mattered) and then we made a rude anti-toast to Ebert and Roper.
I caught Treebeard addressing "young master Gandalf" this time. I love this Pippin - this is *my* Pippin! I love Merry, too. I would love to see Eomer give Legolas a disdainful look for showing off with that Mumak after he brings down two with one spearthrow.
By now you have all know what I love, so here -the things about the movie that bothered me bother me more now. They don't spoil the movie for me, they just spoil the moment.
I *hate* what they do with the dead. I can even concede they might need them on the Pelannor for time, but when they churn through the city like a detergent ad, it takes all power away from the archetype.
I hate that they have made Faramir's second so much older, and that they make it seem that Faramir defers to him. The movie is too short not to show Faramir in the full command of his strength.
I hate kung-fu Gandalf. He needs a taste of his own stick.
And once Gandalf is up in the courtyard with Pippin yelling that Faramir is alive, why the hell doesn't he tell someone to get the boy to the hospital? Do we think lying on the ground moaning Denethor is going to override that command? It's one thing in the book when no one realizes that Dad is keeping Faramir from treatment, it's another thing entirely for Gandalf to walk away from the burning boy.
I hate *old* Bilbo at the end - so overdone they might as well have gotten Mel Brooks.
I hate gollum spinning around wrestling with nothing - nothing about that scene looks convincing.
How can someone who made me *cheer* for Grond for f's sake turn around and use those cheesy effects?
Anyway, I must have Grond icons, and I was going to do one for one of my photoshop lines tonight, but I was having trouble using Graphic Converter and Photoshop at the same time. I ended up playing with the Alan Lee art instead, (thanks to Kortirion for sending me that link) trying to make sure the problem was solved. I may wake up tomorrow and be appalled at these, since I have the kind of headache that makes my eyes ache. (Jim calls it my tech headache) but I like the way they came out and I thought I would share them.
Well, ok, I wasn't sure i was going to share Faramir, but there's nothing new about that sentiment -- and it is a set, so here they all are...
