ascension

Not feeling quite up to original work, but feeling enough better to miss you all terribly. Managed to do some graphics work the last two days (many icons, of which this one is one - it missed the deadline for its challenge, but I don't care, i really love it. time for a web page update)

belenajake has been thinking about poetry, and so many of the things she says remind me of the busiest days at Verse and Adversity - when almost all of the verse gang came in and told us how they had been taught not to fool themselves that poetry is for everybody... We were like V&AA - My Name Is X, And I Am Not Allowed To Have Poetry -- that didn't last long, did it?

Not all poems are universal enough to fly about in the big world, but everyone is entitled to poetry in their everyday life. All it take is a word or a phrase that makes you *feel*

some of my best work was written for the narrowest of audiences- so what? Words are magic- they do more good in action and being shared than when hoarded.

In case I never specifically said how beamingly proud I am of the verse crowd -- it goes to eleven.

this is one of the poems with which I am most pleased. A terzanelle in Denethor's voice, it was written for a challenge at HASA and helped me begin to listen to the voices in my head.

Ascension

My father’s passing brought me to this place
An unthanked servant of an absent king
ascends the steps with ashes on his face

A thousand years of fruitless withering
The truth can’t be denied. This is my fate
an unthanked servant of an absent king

Outside the shadow gathers at the gate
All that begins in my time is - the end
The truth can’t be denied. This is my fate

I cannot shed a tear or seem to bend
lest destiny destroy me like a knife
All that begins in my time is - the end

It asks for all I am; my sons, my wife
And I accept the bargain, as a man
lest destiny destroy me like a knife

My life lies like a bridge across this span
My father’s passing brought me to this place
And I accept the bargain, as a man
ascends the steps with ashes on his face
