tricks, treats, anniversary

happy samhain

Have eaten a real marbled bagel and one real (= not splenda) peanut butter cup! (smirks)

Under the protective umbrella of the "or" in Trick or Treat, I can pretend to a confidence I don't really have. Ring the doorbell, leave a comment if you want a trick-or-treat, and I will make you an icon from a randomly picked interest on your list. We'll aim for treats, but hey, you never know. Especially if Jim helps. He made me this:

(I also have fat man and little boy earrings he got me for my birthday some years back - quite a resemblemce to this bomb. They came from the alamagordo gift shop. My birthday is a few days late for that event, really - though my brother was born on the 6th.)

today marks one year since cruisedirector plied me with late night letters and an invitation and cajoled me into journaling in public

today marks the day that jim (notarysojac) and I celebrate our handfasting anniversary. We have been together since 1977, so we celebrate that as our main anniversary - it will be twenty seven years this New Years Eve Eve- but at that time his job (he was considered to be "in the field") and the tax laws at the time made it (much) more advantageous for us to live together rather than get legally married. That changed in 1985, when they decided it had been long enough to consider him long term. (It's true, we had been at Princeton for 8 years, but we never had more than 6 months at a time where we were sure we were not going to be moved for a different project. It took me 5 years before I was brave enough to just paint a wall and say - if they move us, we'll paint it white again.)

He proposed marriage to me (in many senses of the word proposition) while I was reading in the tub. He made me a ring - it has a green plastic stone, and is set in a band of sculpy and was baked in the convection oven while I was washing my hair.

Marriage was in the air that year, and three long time couples, all long time friends, decided to get married that October. Hurricane Gloria swept through just before the weddings. Leta and Norm 's band were trapped in Connecticut with a huge tree fallen across each end of the circular drive where the van with the instruments was parked. For Kim and Claire's we were out on the North Fork of Long Island. We could see the jetty and the ocean while sitting up in bed in our motel room the night of the rehearsal dinner, but in the morning there was just water, creeping to the back deck. The Mad Anthony Wayne mansion, where their wedding was held, was one of the only places to have power back on - it didn't last long, but it lasted long enough.

Ours was on Samhain, and it was in costume. (Yes, Christopher kneeling in a kilt)

This year we celebrated in ways that are traditional - well, for us. (Ninteen is the traditional writing pr0n together anniversary, isn't it?) We bought some great anime and cds (playing the new Tom Waits as I type this. Don't Go Into That Barn, yeah... ) and Weta celebrated by sending two old pre-orders this week - Elessar and GilGalad. Woohoo.

And last night we decided we were done shopping around and waiting, and pushed the button together (one finger each) for new 17" powerbooks. So that will be our big yulies. WooHoo!!

Go here to see Lee and Annaliese (shuttergal) in their Samhain finery. And Lee's injury, which looks drawn on for Halloween, but unfortunately was not!

Another Treat: While I was sick, I got a package in the mail from avon7. I then promptly "lost" it on my desk while I was sleeping 20 hours a day. But, the treasure has resurfaced!

Avon and her sister used to tape an Australian cop show called Blue Heelers. She went through her tapes, and found she had an episode with our Mr Wenham as a guest star (one of two appearances he made on the show) She warns me he was "scrawny" in 1994, which I am greatly looking forward to!

There was also a wombat in the package, and you all know that any package containing a wombat is the omen of a very good day. And have I mentiond how ultimately cool it is to know people all aroung the planet?

**hugs avon** You will have to drop a few hints about American things I can send you.
