we are currently trying to decide on permanent names for the new powerbooks, so if you have suggestions, let's hear 'em.
It seems inevitable that we will pick the names of twins, and in fact Castor and Pollux were among the first ideas. Elladan and Elrohir as well, but they seem destined for silly nicknames
The new books are aluminum, and this led to a list of really silly paired names based on "Al" that I would like to prevent Jim becoming attached to.
Past macs: (all well loved, and all pased to good homes when they left us)
Jaime - our first Mac, a 512k (or fat mac) was named after Jim. There were a few moments of debate over the sex of the this new type of machinery, but then Jim slid a disk in and out of the slot and annouced "It's a girl" She was daddy's girl indeed - Jim has always been the beloved of the machine gods.
Fiona: she was a sleek charcoal grey PowerBook 180 laptop. I no longer remember how she got that particular name. She had a powerball, and I thought I would never get used to the lack of a mouse. When I moved on, I missed it and had trouble going back. New times, new skills. (But I have *never* gotten the hang of the touchpad) Spoo was still alive, and he used to sleep on my desk, down the length of my left arm. He would put his great big polydactylic paw on the space bar, or sometimes he would spin the powerball. You think the typos that get through now are bad!
Gigantor: a PowerMac 8500 MiniTower that Jim borrowed from work - one of the perks of being the guardian of the Macs in a company transitioning to mostly PCs. We had borrowed it over the time Jim took off for the Yuletide holidays so we each had a Mac to work on - me to write an entire Outta' Sights & Sounds SoundCheck seasonal newsletter from scratch, and Jim to make our holiday card on it. Once it came ot live with us, it was soon upgraded from its 120Mhz PPC604 processor to a screaming 180Mhz PPC604e processor. Woo. It was the hugest computer we ever had in our house - up to that time.
Katrinka: my loaded beige G3 MiniTower. She was named for Katrinka in the Toonerville Trolly cartoons from my childhood, a strapping blond woman with braids who would pick up the trolly and carry it home, saying "Katrinka Fix!"
We had a blackbird that lived with us for a while, though she belonged to Jim's company. I don't recall that she ever had another name; I just like Blackbird (G)
Jim's G4 (a perk from his job when he agreed to leave the engineering department and become the entire web department) is now the server. Her name is Sindar.
The laptop Jim has been using, which is another castoff from his job is called Carole because (duh) she's a Lombard.
Titania got her name because she is a titanium g4. Obvious, but appropriate - she is the queen of the fairies.
Jim's G5: whose enormous steely grey tower is named Morwen Steelsheen.
