drabble: Forlong

for this weeks challenge at tolkien_weekly:
Write a character you have not written about before.

Title: Forlong
Characters/Pairing: Forlong of Lossarnach
Rating: G
Book/Source: LotR
Disclaimer: All of it belongs to The Professor, though these stories are from the Arda in my heart.

The armour dwarfed him like a child playing soldier in his father’s gear, and clanged like a traveler’s cart as he struggled to hoist it above his shoulders. Still, all of that was as nothing to the hauling and heaving and the silent pleading that the buckles and straps might mesh.

“Get on with it,” roared a voice like thunder in the mountains. “All of Gondor is waiting. I don’t bite!”

At the stricken look on his aides face as he considered the mountain of a man before him, the thunder broke and rolled down as laughter.

“Not squires, anyway!”
